What is SEO?
Think of the Internet as a massive library. People like me and you --all of us, all over the world use this massive library everyday.
There are only three things we do at this “library” that‘s become a part of everyday life…
The first thing we do, is create content for the Internet.
We make websites, articles, blog posts, facebook posts, tweets and all sorts of content and give it to the “library” so other people can see our content. We‘re also free to update and improve our content in the “library” as time goes on.
The second thing we all do at the “library” is that we habitually use use it to search for things we’re looking for. Most of us no longer use encyclopedias, phone books or the tv guide. Everything is now searched on the Internet.
And the third thing we all do at the “library”, is hang out, talk and share ideas and information with other people in the “library”.
This “library” has become so huge, that according to a June 2017 report by The International Telecommunication Union, 3.8 billion people now use the Internet.
So...the Internet is this very big, very popular and very useful global “library”. And what do libraries need?
The Internet needs librarians to sort, label, organize, connect and fetch all the information we contribute to the Internet.
Search Engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo are the “librarians” who take all the information everyone creates daily on the Internet. They label it, organize it and fetch it for us whenever we use their search box.
When we use a “librarian‘s” search box, what they do is gather a list of websites and organize them in relevance order.
Each “librarian”, whether it‘s Google, Bing or Yahoo, has their own set of criteria to determine whether a webpage is relevant to what people are searching for.
The websites that they think are the most relevant will rank high on their search results. And the websites that they don‘t think are relevant to the search term will rank lowest.
Now, as local business owners, we know that the easier it is for people to find us, the more likely people will choose to buy from us.
So when people search for your products or services, and you show up at the very bottom of search results (that is, anything past page one), you know people are unlikely to find you, much less buy from you.
Unless you‘re easy to find and readily available to people searching on the Internet, you‘ll be lost among the thousands of other websites competing for that coveted "page one" spot.
To get placed at the very top of search results, you need to convince Google, Yahoo and Bing, that you --and not your competitors, are the MOST relevant website for whatever your potential customers are searching for.
This practice of convincing Google, Yahoo and Bing to rank you highest in search results is what is called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short.
SEO is basically anything and everything you do to make your websites the most obvious and most relevant choice in Google‘s eyes.
As "librarians," Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines have to wade through millions upon millions of websites to find which ones are the most relevant to what you are looking for. They then have to give you these results in less than 1 second.
This is no easy feat, so Google, Yahoo and Bing have come up with their own set of criteria, rules and regulations to expedite the process.
One part of Search Engine Optimization is meeting their criteria and following their rules to a tee.
Another part of Search Engine Optimization is making the librarians‘ lives easier by properly structuring your website and continuously improving your content. This makes it easier for the librarians to label and organize your stuff so they can assess it‘s relevancy and fetch it quickly for someone‘s search.
Also a part of Search Engine Optimization, is to make your website and your content really interesting and useful so that it becomes popular. The “librarians” will take note of your popularity and give you a bump in your page rank.
Sometimes others try to trick and manipulate the “librarians” by bending the rules so their website gets ranked high very fast. This usually backfires because once the “librarians” find out, these guys‘ content wont show up in search results anymore --ever.
This is what is called a de-indexing or a Google "slap" or a Google penalty --and you certainly don‘t want it happening to you.
Not a lot of people can do Search Engine Optimization correctly and it‘s best to leave it up to the professionals.
